The Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center:
The Long Island Aquarium is a public aquarium in Riverhead, NY, that was founded in June, 2000. This 15-year old aquarium features a 20,000 Gallon reef tank that is famous for having one of the largest collections of aquacultured coral in the world! This epic reef tank, built by Curator and Co-Founder Joe Yaiullo, features captive grown coral colonies that reach up to 6-feet in diameter! Prepare to be blown away by Joe’s astonishing collection of hundreds of tropical marine fish that will give any seasoned reefer fish-envy. Joe’s reef tank is home to hundreds of Acropora colonies, 2-foot tall gorgonian colonies, giant clams, and much much more! Behind the scenes, ReefGen, the wholesale aquaculture company, frags and cultures 10,000Gallons of captive grown coral, some of which hails from Joe’s reef. During the banquet dinner, you can tag along on a behind the scenes tour of ReefGen with Laura or Justin.
The Long Island Aquarium is famous for it’s reef tank, but it is a large aquarium with dozens of exhibits. The LIA features a 100,000 Gallon shark tank filled with several 10-foot long sand tiger sharks loaded with teeth! There is a Sea Lion exhibit that has several daily sea lion shows which are a lot of fun (I promise you, it’s worth it, even if you’re a die hard reefer.) The aquarium is home to 5 beautiful rescue seals on exhibit in the front of the aquarium, as well as many rescue seals and sea turtles being rehabilitated behind the scenes. You can enjoy aquariums filled with discus, piranhas, octopuses, cuttlefish, giant spider crabs and much more! Don’t forget the snow monkeys, river otters, and penguins outside! The penguins are always a big hit, since Joe Yaiullo helped hand raised 5 of these beautiful birds, these tame penguins often follow him around the aquarium!
